Closing Out the Regular Season in Style

Spindles 5 - 1 Rascals

5' - Buttofucco (Crook)

43' - Locicero (Rabadi)

60' - Rabadi (P)

78' - Breen (Geczy)

88' - Lopez (Sanchez)

The Spins capped off the regular season with a massive win over Rascals.

Not only did the victory include 5 Spindles goals, but most importantly it was the result we needed to take the 2nd place seed for the CDSL playoffs.

After starting the week in 5th place, playoffs were guarantteed but only a point separated 5th and 2nd place.

Meaning it all to play for for 4 teams during the last couple of weeks.

With a bit of luck in other matches and 3 straight Spindles wins to end the season, the Spins secured 2nd.

CDSL Playoffs

In the CDSL there are 8 teams. At the end of the 10-game regular season, seeds 1 and 2 secure a bye-week and go straight to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile seed 3 plays 6 and seed 4 plays 5 in the quarterfinals next week.

In this case, the highest seed of those 2 matches to advance will face Spindles on Thursday, July 25 in the semi-finals.

Match Recap

The last time Spindles came up against Rascals was a Matchweek 3, 2-0 loss.

With the 2nd seed in site, winning was the only option this time around.

The scoring kicked off early when Dan Crook pinged a ball over the Rascals backline to Anthony Buttofucco, who touched it around the keeper and practicially dribbled it over the line. 1-0, 5'.

Shortly after, a lapse in the Spindles defence led to an easy Rascals goal. 1-1. A happy site for the opposing teams in attendance.

Luckily, before the end of the half Matt Rabadi broke the defensive line with a floating cross to John Locicero, who was able to bring it down and around the keeper before hammering it home. 2-1, 43'.

Locicero's 4th of the season, making him joint Spindles top-scorer with Zeidane Adjei headed into playoffs.

At halftime, the club hosted a FREE raffle for a Spindles Independence Day Trucker Hat made by our match sponsor Capital Region Embroidery.

Congrats to Russell Phoenix for winning the hat! A OG Spindles vet.

The second half went on to be just as eventful in the first.

The Spins continued to create chances.

15 minutes in, Rabadi came barreling down the wing before a Rascals defender stepped in too late, taking him out in the box. Penalty to Spindles.

Rabadi calmly converted it, 3-1, 60'.

The Spindles backline continued to shut down any Rascals chance before it even made their final 3rd.

Meanwhile, the attack was fully focused on extending the 2 goal lead.

Eventually, Luke Geczy played a perfect pass to Ryan Breen after some great hold up play.

Never in doubt when 1v1 with the keeper, Breen slotted it in the bottom left corner. 4-1, 78'.

A comfortable lead for the Spins.

With everyone trying to get on the scoresheet, Danny Sanchez shot up and down the wing while closing out the game.

After a late breakaway, Sanchez plays a perfectly weighted pass to Marcos Lopez who crushed one through the keepers hands and into the net. 5-1, 88'.

Lopez's first for the club.

A perfect ending to a regular season full of ups and down. But ultimatley became the clubs best regular season finish at 2nd place with 6 wins and 4 losses.

With the bye-week, the Spins will have plenty of time to rest and work to prepare for the semi-finals.

See y'all in the Y'offs.
